A reporting workshop brought to you by the Robert R. McCormick Foundation and the Poynter Institute
MAY 8 in Springfield, Ill.
and MAY 10 in Chicago
Veterans are returning to Illinois from Iraq and Afghanistan seeking jobs, housing and health care for themselves and their families. What these “New Veterans” find, however, is that government cannot meet those needs.
At this one-day workshop, reporters will work with experts on this topic and Butch Ward, senior faculty of The Poynter Institute and former managing editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer, to find and tell those veterans’ stories. How successful are nationwide and community efforts to fill the gap in services for veterans? How can reporters find out what keeps programs from succeeding in their towns? How can news organizations put a face to this story and make a difference in their communities?
This workshop in Springfield on Wednesday, May 8, and in Arlington Heights on Friday, May 10, is designed to help journalists tell the stories of America’s New Veterans and their efforts to fully rejoin their communities.
