Alexandria, Va. — An advocate for the employment of military veterans, the Society for Human Resource Management is joining Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, in supporting a Los Angeles hiring fair for veterans and their spouses.
As part of its broader commitment to the hiring and retaining of veterans in the civilian workplace, SHRM is recruiting employers to participate in the July 10 “Hiring our Heroes Los Angeles” event. About 200 employers and 1,500 military veterans and spouses are expected at the job fair co-hosted by the U.S. and Los Angeles Area Chambers of Commerce.
“A job fair is one important way for HR professionals and employers to connect with military veterans. SHRM is pleased to contribute to an event that can lead to jobs for the men and women who have served our country,” said Interim President and CEO Henry G. Jackson, who will represent SHRM — the world’s largest HR association — at the event.
“Connecting veterans with employment opportunities in their communities is also very important,” Jackson added. “SHRM members — in communities across the country — are mobilized on this issue.”
The royal couple’s appearance at the hiring fair at Sony Pictures Studios in Los Angeles was announced by ServiceNation: Mission Serve. In addition, the royal newlyweds will join a service project — in partnership with Blue Star Families and the USO — to create 1,000 care packages for military children, as well as attend a special reception for supporters of the cause.
The Foundation of Prince William and Prince Harry is the princes’ primary charitable vehicle and has as one of its core aims to raise awareness and support for servicemen and women.
The job fair, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., is set to make a significant difference in California, where more than 100,000 veterans are seeking jobs. Other organizations working with the chambers and ServiceNation: Mission Serve are the Department of Labor’s Veterans’ Employment and Training Service; the Department of Defense’s Military Spouse Employment Partnership; Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve; Employment Development Department of California; and United Way of Los Angeles.

Participating employers should have job opportunities available and will be expected to report the following metrics to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce after the hiring fair: number of applications received; number of veterans and military spouses offered jobs; and, most importantly, the number of veterans and spouses hired by the company.
