One of the chronic problems veterans are facing is unemployment after they leave the military. Yes, many civilians also are in the same boat. But this site is for reporters who cover the military and veterans.
There is a good opportunity this week in New York at the Veterans on Wall Street conference on the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.
For veterans there will be workshops to demystify and learn more about the financial services industry and learn from veterans, experts in veteran placement, and human resources professionals how to most successfully leverage your military experience into a successful transition into the civilian world.
For reporters, it will be a good chance to talk to veterans about their job searches, what working, what’s not. It also will be a good chance to get with the company suits and ask how many veterans they have hired in the past 10 years, what kind of military training crosses over to the civilian market, etc.
Bank of America, Citi, Credit Suisse, Goldman Sachs, and Deutsche Bank are all stepping up to support America’s newest generation of veterans. Alongside them, Amazon.com, IBM, H&R Block, MetLife, Sears, Verizon, Wal-Mart, the VA and the State Department are just a handful of some of the country’s and world’s top employers who will be at the event.
Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal, NYSE Euronext Chairman Marshall Carter, Senator Chuck Hagel and other key leaders will speak to the critical issue of veteran joblessness. There will be networking with Wall Street leaders and other Iraq and Afghanistan veterans.
The VOWS conference will convene Wall Street partners, recent veterans, military and government leaders, military support organizations and others who have a shared interest in veterans’ employment opportunities in the private sector. The aim of the VOWS conference is to raise the profile of veterans on Wall Street and highlight the industry as a veteran-friendly employer.
