This one is a tough one to write; but I've been saying it for a long time. The Associated Press no longer can be regarded as a credible news source when it comes to reporting on the military.  … [Read more...]

According to internal documents obtained by Air Force Times, beginning April 9, 2013, the Air Force will begin grounding front line combat units as a consequence of sequestration and the need to deal with budget cuts. Congressional aide says ammo clips can’t be reloaded

Stripper clip

I just sent an email to Juliet Johnson who is the communications chief for U.S. Rep. Diana DeGrette of Denver. DeGrette is the lead sponsor in trying to eliminate high-capacity magazines used in weapons such as the AR-15. The Democratic congresswomen said at a public forum today that magazines could not be reloaded. "The bullets will have been shot and there won't be any more (magazines) available," DeGrette said. DeGrette was mistaken, and Johnson later attempted to clarify what DeGrette meant. The congresswoman has been working on a high-capacity assault magazine ban for years and has been deeply involved in the … [Read more...]

Life magazine photo editor who beat the censors dies at 94

The photo of three dead American soldiers lying in the sand on the shoreline near half sunken landing craft on Buna Beach, Papua New Guinea is now considered a war classic. The photo, taken in February 1943, was not published until Life's Sept. 20, 1943 issue. This photo and other equally gruesome and graphic pictures of WWII were OK’d by the Office of War Information’s censors, in part because President Roosevelt feared that the American public might be growing complacent about the war and its horrific toll. Photo by George Strock.

At a time when censors used a heavy hand to keep the American public from knowing and seeing the carnage in the Pacific during World War II, A.B.C. "Cal" Whipple of Greenwich, England, helped get a ground-breaking photograph of dead American soldiers published during the war. Whipple died March 17, 2013, his son said. He was 94. … [Read more...]
